UVM STEM Complex Achieves LEED Silver Certification

February 8, 2022

When The University of Vermont’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Complex opened in 2019, it was the largest investment in new facilities in the school’s 230-year history. Now, after a comprehensive review by the United States Green Building Council, the STEM Complex achieves another milestone: LEED Silver certification.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, commonly referred to as LEED, is a green building certification program used worldwide. Buildings that achieve LEED certification lower carbon emissions, reduce operating costs, and conserve resources while prioritizing sustainable practices and human health. The STEM Complex is one of many LEED certified projects on the UVM campus, which is widely recognized as a national leader in sustainability.

The three-building project includes Discovery Hall, a 100,000 square-foot laboratory building, Innovation Hall, a 73,000 square-foot, high-tech classroom building, and multi-story renovations to the adjacent Votey School of Engineering Building. The design was a truly collaborative effort between Freeman French Freeman and Ellenzweig of Boston, Massachusetts.
