Union Mutual HQ Recognized as One of Vermont’s Architectural Treasures

The American Institute of Architects, Vermont Chapter (AIAVT) has recognized the Montpelier headquarters of the Union Mutual Insurance Company as one of the state’s most architecturally significant buildings.

The distinction came following a statewide competition by AIAVT, which turns 75 this year. To commemorate this important milestone, the organization sought to identify the best buildings completed in Vermont since 1948. An esteemed panel of judges chose Union Mutual as one of just 11 buildings worthy of the 75-Year Award at its annual meeting on December 7.

The building was designed by the Burlington firm of Freeman French Freeman and completed in 1958. It is widely recognized as one of Vermont’s finest examples of modern architecture and looks much the same today as when it first opened 65 years ago.

Located on State Street in Montpelier, the building’s timeless quality and use of natural materials allows it to sit comfortably alongside many of Vermont’s most cherished historic buildings, including the Vermont State House. What’s more, the building continues to serve its original owner, Union Mutual, as a place of business to this day.

Coincidentally, the building’s lead architect, Ruth Freeman, was also instrumental in founding AIAVT and served as the organization’s first President. Today AIAVT members can be found in every corner of the state, actively working to achieve a zero-carbon, resilient, healthy, just, and equitable built environment.
